John M., full story
John & Ruth...
After a 38-year career as an electrical engineer with Malden Mills 'the Polartec™ people,' John reports
that he is "recently retired and enjoying life." However, he also struggles to manage the symptoms of
Parkinson's Disease. His wife Ruth, who accompanies him on his visits to Dr. Rosenthal, is a registered
nurse by vocation and a painter by avocation.
John says:
About two years ago, I developed a pain in my right side, so I went to a conventional doctor and had x-
rays that showed no problem. I then saw a rheumatologist, who had me try medication. No results. I tried
physical therapy; I tried muscular therapy—that solved some of my other back problems but not the pain in
my side. I had a series of MRIs. I visited an orthopedic surgeon. I went to a pain clinic. Nothing helped. I
had some neuro-spinal (cortisone) shots—that did nothing at all. I saw two neurosurgeons who both said
they couldn't help me. I then saw a neurologist, who diagnosed Parkinson's Disease.
As a last resort and at my wife's suggestion, I thought I'd try acupuncture. It helped relieve some of the
pain. The acupuncturist suggested that I see a chiropractor for some muscular types of therapy and
structural body work. He referred me to Dr. Rosenthal. During visits with Dr. Rosenthal, he stretches my
body into various positions. He said my posture was like that of someone leaning up against a bar. He has
had to straighten me out. I've been seeing him for two months. If I hadn't consulted Dr. Rosenthal, I'd be
dealing with the same intractable pain. It bothered every aspect of my life, including my sleep. It was
always there. Medications didn't do anything. I tried Ibuprofen in high doses: it did nothing. Vioxx™ did
nothing. Working with Dr. Rosenthal has helped me a lot. Hopefully, in the next couple of months, we'll
have the rest of the pain taken care of.
Ruth adds:
My husband John had considerable scarring from an old injury and I think therapy with Dr. Rosenthal has
helped that considerably. I suspected all along that the scar tissue was causing some of John's problems.
One physician offered nothing. He simply said there was "nothing" he could do. Doctors should be aware
that clinicians like Dr. Rosenthal are available as a resource to patients with problems beyond their areas
of expertise.
